Make sure to drink water throughout the day to help with the dry mouth and to prevent dehydration. Drinking eight to 10 glasses of water is recommended. Carry a water bottle with you all the time. Avoid consuming tea, coffee and alcohol which may decrease saliva production.

      Sugar-free candy

The use of sugar-free gum or hard candy may help increase the amount of saliva.

    • 3
      Dry crackers

Moisten foods by drinking water or use gravy to make it easier to swallow. Try to avoid eating dry foods such as crackers, toast or cookies without softening them first with liquid. Also stay away from salty foods.

    • 4
      Avoid smoking

Stay away from smoking, as it is a major cause of xerostomia.

    • 5
      Oral hygiene

Visit your dentist regularly. Your dentist may prescribe flouride treatments to prevent cavities. Maintain meticulous oral hygiene at home using special toothpaste and rinses manufactured for dry mouth syndrome (like Biotene). Make sure the mouthwash does not contain alcohol. Add lip balms for dry lips and in the creases of the mouth.

    • 6
      Humidifier

Breathe through your nose instead of your mouth. Keep the room air moist by using a humidifier.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your dry mouth persists after trying self-help tips, visit a qualified physician who may prescribe oral medications to stimulate saliva production. Two such medications are pilocarpine (Salagen) and cevimeline (Evoxac).
