Stop a PC Clock

A clock indicating the current time is usually displayed in the task bar of the PC. One can hide the clock in the task bar if needed. However, hiding the clock does not mean closing the clock itself. The clock actually runs in the background. A computer has two clocks; a software clock and a hardware clock. Follow the steps below to turn off both clocks in your computer.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Turn off your computer to turn the software clock off. The clock turns ON when you turn ON your computer.

  2. Step 2

To stop the hardware PC clock, open the CPU panel and remove the CMOS battery on the motherboard. CMOS battery is a coin-like silver colored battery.

  3. Step 3

Replace a drained CMOS battery back in the motherboard and close the CPU panel. Start your desktop again and log in.

  4. Step 4

Right-click the clock in "Taskbar" and click "Properties." Un-check the "Clock" option in the "Notification Area" tab and click "Apply" and "OK."

  5. Step 5

Restart the desktop once more if prompted to restart.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some programs that require system time might not run properly. The BIOS settings also will be lost in the process.
