Click on the Avast icon in your taskbar. This opens a window where you can see the resident protection screen. Click on "Details" to open up the full details. This screen is for customizing instant messaging, Internet mail, Network Shield, Outlook Exchange, P2P Shield, Standard Shield and Web Shield. By clicking each section and the "Customize" button, you can set up your computer protection.

Click the right side of the mouse to open a drop-down box. Select "Start Avast Anti-Virus" to open a "Memory Test" window. Allow the scan and click "Continue" when it is done.

Read the "Simple user interface" that opens up if this is your first time using Avast. Close the window and you will see the Avast control panel.

Select the local disks, removable media and folders to scan on the right side of the console. Select "Start Scan" from the left side of the console. The scan will start and run. Allow this process to complete. It can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour, depending on your computer.

View the virus chest by clicking the "Chest" on the left side of the console. This will show you all viruses found and when. Click the "Avast" button to set the sensitivity of the scanner.

Allow the virus protection to update anytime the computer is on. If you get a blue pop-up box saying, "Anti-Virus has been updated," you don't have to do anything. If you get a green pop-up box, click the inside of the box and allow the virus database to update and install.
