Practice Bowling Etiquette

Bowling is supposed to be fun. As you read the following rules of etiquette, remember that their intent is only to help the game run smoothly.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bowling ball towels
  • Wrist braces
  • Bowling balls
  • Bowling shoes
  1. Step 1

Read and follow all specific rules posted at the alley.

  2. Step 2

Wear only bowling shoes on the lanes.

  3. Step 3

Wait for the pin-setting machine to finish its cycle before bowling.

  4. Step 4

Allow the bowler in an adjacent lane to play first if you both approach the runway at the same time. Especially defer to a bowler in the lane on your right. Otherwise, the player who arrives first goes first.

  5. Step 5

Observe the foul line, even in casual play. Play fair.

  6. Step 6

Bowl the ball down the lane. Do not throw or toss the ball, as it may damage the lane.

  7. Step 7

Confine your bowling to your own lane.

  8. Step 8

Avoid using someone else's ball without permission.

  9. Step 9

Avoid distracting other players while they bowl. Limit swearing and bad language as much as possible.

  10. Step 10

Be ready when it's your turn.

  11. Step 11

Keep accurate score. Technical innovations have automated scorekeeping at most alleys.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you're hooked and plan to bowl frequently, invest in a comfortable pair of bowling shoes and a ball. This way, you'll eliminate shoe rental fees and the inconsistent effects of using multiple balls in a game.
  • Feel free to show your enthusiasm, snack, drink, play some music on the jukebox or whatever you like, but use some discretion. Keep in mind that others may be there to bowl competitively and seriously.

on 11/22/2005 When it's your turn to bowl and the players on either side are up, it's generally a good idea to step back off the approach until both sides are clear. This applies to every ball you throw.

on 11/22/2005 Please ask the management if you may take pictures during open bowling or a bowling event. The flash from the camera can be VERY distracting to serious bowlers.

on 11/22/2005 It's usually not a good idea to let other people use your bowling balls and/or shoes because the contour of your foot gets worn into the shoe and that helps you maintain your balance.

on 11/22/2005 Never bowl when someone is on either your right or your left. Usually, the person on the right has the right of way to bowl first. If you find yourself between two others, both of the others are to bowl before you do.
