Libraries have used microfiche for years as a way to create available physical space. Instead of keeping original copies of newspapers and magazines, they keep small films that contain images of these materials. Much of this information has not been converted into a digital format and microfiche or microfilm is the only method available to access the information. It may seem intimidating to use the large, bulky microform reader, but it is easy to master manipulating the image.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Microfiche reader
  • Printer
  • Copy card or coins
  1. Step 1

Search the library catalog to find the correct microfiche. These are usually organized by publication and then by date.

  2. Step 2

Turn on the microfiche reader and allow it to warm up if necessary. Turn on the printer attached to the machine.

  3. Step 3

Pull out the microfiche tray until the glass cover rises. Place the microfiche under the glass and return the tray until the cover closes over the microfiche.

  4. Step 4

Move the tray around until you find the location on the microfiche that contains the information you need. Use the focus knob to make the image clearer.

  5. Step 5

Turn the rotation knob to change the orientation of the image. Manipulate the zoom and focus knobs until you get an appropriate image.

  6. Step 6

Move and manipulate the image until it appears on the screen between the cross hairs. This is the area that will be printed.

  7. Step 7

Add money or swipe your printing card. Press the print button to get a copy of the image.

  8. Step 8

Remove the microfiche by pulling out the tray and retrieving it from under the glass. Return the tray to the original position.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many microfiche readers also work for microfilm. Remove any microfilm that may have been left on the machine. Ask the librarian for help. It can be confusing to use the machine the first time.
