Things You'll Need:
- cane
- you
-
Step 1
Stand up with the cane at your side. Make sure and stand straight, but relaxed. Wear shoes that you would normally wear most of the time.
-
Step 2
Let your arm drop to your side next to the cane. Do not shrug your shoulders, just let your shoulders be relaxed. Do not lean over to the side, make sure you are standing equally on both legs.
-
Step 3
The hand grip of the cane should be even with your wrist. In other words, when you hold onto the cane you should have about a 30 degree angle at the elbow.
-
Step 4
Adjust the cane accordingly and off you go. Remember to use the cane in the same side of the injured leg...why you ask? It makes your base of support larger, thus it makes you more stable.

on 9/26/2009 STEP 4 is incorrect. The cane should be on the opposite side of the injured or involved leg.
