Step 1
Keep your pet rat in a cage and stop over to visit it on a regular basis. Bring a treat with you each time you come to visit it. If you give it a treat every time you go to see it, this will help it lose any fear that it may have of you. This will also tell the rat that you are not a bad person, and it can trust you.
-
Step 2
Begin to make your rat come to the door of the cage in order to get their treat. If you make them come to the door to get the treat, you will again reduce their fear of you.
-
Step 3
After you feel comfortable with letting your rat out of the cage, play with it. Get some rat toys and play games with your rat - anything you can do to get your rat to like you.
-
Step 4
Continue these steps until you feel very comfortable with your rat, and you think that the rat feels confident with being around you. Give the rat some freedom, and let it roam around an entire room on its own for a little bit. This will be a great way for you to monitor how the rat may act on its own when you are not home.
