How to Remove labels from wood boards

Wood boards often come with price labels affixed to them. For many projects, it does not matter if the label stays on or not. But if you are making a quality project in which the labeled area will be visible to people, it is important to completely remove the label and the adhesive completely since it will show even if the wood is painted or stained.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use a hair dryer to heat the label.

You could use a heat gun instead of a hair dryer. Heat guns are typically used to bubble off paint instead of scraping. But not more people have a hair dryer than a heat gun, and both will work just fine.

  2. Step 2

Scrape the label gently with a putty knife or butter knife.

If you are working with a soft wood, be especially careful that you do not gouge, scraper, or leave an indentation in the board.

  3. Step 3

Clean the area with acetone to remove the adhesive.

Acetone is also known as fingernail polish remover.

  4. Step 4

Lightly sand the area with a fine grit sand paper.
