How to Remove Mildew Stain from Fabric

Mold and mildew will grow on fabric if it is put away wet or becomes wet while stored. A tent that is packed up with dew on it; towels that become damp while stored under a bathroom sink; items that become damp in a moist basement; lawn furniture cushions; all of this and more can be cleaned as good as new by taking a little extra time and care.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take the items outside. If you keep them inside, you will simply allow the mold spores to get in the air and land on something else where it can grow and cause a problem.

  2. Step 2

Allow the items to dry in the sun until completely dry. Sunlight is a natural disinfectant which helps to stop mold growth.

  3. Step 3

Put on a paper mask and rubber gloves.

  4. Step 4

Brush away loose mold spores with a stiff brush.

  5. Step 5

Apply a color safe bleach directly to the moldy spots. Allow the cleaner to soak in to the fabric for at least 30 minutes.

  6. Step 6

Rinse and wash in the clothes washer. Or if the fabric cannot go in the washer (such as a chair cushion or tent), then wash with a rag and rinse well.

  7. Step 7

Dry completely before putting the item away.
