Step 1
First of all, if you live in a city where housing is in high demand, consider moving further out in order to find cheap housing. Be sure to weight the commuting costs of living further out with any money you save on housing.
-
Step 2
Look beyond the usual homes and apartments. Perhaps you can find a trailer for rent. It may not be what you are looking for long-term, but it's one way to find cheap housing now.
-
Step 3
Look in places besides the usual apartment locater resources. Craigslist is a good place to find cheap housing, especially if you don't mind having roommates.
-
Step 4
Housesitting is a way to find cheap (or free) housing for many people. This works best if you have a social circle where you know many people who can vouch for you and let you know who is leaving town.
-
Step 5
This is a radical step, but it works. If you work from home via your computer, consider moving to a country where the cost of living is cheaper. I rented a beautiful apartment with three balconies in a gorgeous town in Mexico for only $100. Talk about finding cheap housing! I hit the jackpot!
-
Step 6
Consider bartering for cheap or free housing. For example, I saw one advertisement that offered $150 off of the rent if the tenant would help out with the kitchen garden.
-
Step 7
Make your own cheap housing. Find some cheap land, and build a straw bale house or put a trailer on it. You can add to it as you go.
