How to Elope in Georgia

How to Elope in Georgia thumbnail
Eloping to Georgia's beaches in Savannah or Jekyll Island is intimate and simple.

Whether it's a historic inn in Savannah or a seaside resort on Jekyll Island, Georgia offers diverse options for couples interested in a more intimate elopement, rather than the traditional large affair. Georgia allows residents of all states to get married within the state. If the individuals are Georgia residents, they can get the license in any county; out-of-state couples need to get a marriage license in the county in which they are getting married. There is no waiting period after you get this license, so you can get married right away.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick a venue. Georgia has mountain inns, historic homes and seaside retreats. Many locations like the Azalea Inn of Savannah offer elopement packages. These packages vary by location, but can include flowers, photographer, overnight accommodation and a minister to officiate the ceremony.

Book a venue. Take two forms of identification with you when you leave for your venue. This can be a state-issued identification card, driver's license, passport, Social Security card or birth certificate.

    • 3

Attend a qualifying pre-marital counseling course. This is optional. If the couple attends a counseling course prior to applying for their marriage license, the cost of the license will be reduced. The programs include at least six hours of instruction within a year before the marriage date.

Apply for your marriage license at the county courthouse, in the county in which your venue is located. Take your two forms of identification and cash or a money order; the license is $56. If you completed a qualifying pre-marital counseling course, present the certificate of completion to reduce license price to $16. Both parties need to be at least 18 years old; if the parties are 16 or 17 years old, they can get married with parental consent.
