With the recession of the economy, it's difficult to keep up with expenses and monthly bills, much less buy necessities like food and clothing. We often find ourselves going without because we cannot afford to buy anything out of budget. Clothing is usually one essential we skimp on by trying to stretch out the life of our old clothes. Here are some tips for saving money when purchasing clothes both in store and online.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Trying purchasing your clothes from thrift stores such as the Goodwill or Salvation Army. You be surprised at what kinds of clothing people get rid of and what good of shape they are in. You'll definitely save money because most clothes only cost about $.25 - $1.00 or little more per piece. A lot of times, the Goodwill even has sales on clothes where you can fill a bag for $5.00 or get articles of clothing for pennies. If you have a concern about buying clothes from a thrift store, consider the fact that the majority of clothing taken there comes from people who can afford to get rid of them, therefore usually the middle class.

  2. Step 2

Purchasing your clothing at Wal-Mart can save you lots of money compared to shopping at the Bon-Ton, J.C.Penneys, Kohl's, or other designer stores. Wal-Mart has super low prices and usually has sales in their weekly ads. If you look carefully at the sales racks, you can find out of season clothing for very cheap. Try purchasing winter clothing from Wal-Mart during the summer and vice-versa. You'll find that sales prices are amazingly cheap if you shop out of season.

  3. Step 3

Dollar General and Family Dollar Stores also sell clothing and you can usually find articles of clothing very cheap. Discount stores such as Family Dollar are able to purchase clothing at a discount price in order to resell them to customers for dollars less than other stores. The only thing you need to watch is that the clothing is made of cotton or a material that will not rip or tear when worn or washed. Most of the Dollar Store clothing is good quality though so you needn't worry too much.

  4. Step 4

People who shop online for clothing often get great deals. One place to shop for clothes is eBay. EBay offers people a chance to bid on clothing for cheaper prices and even come up with a ‘best offer'. You can either choose to ‘buy it now' or bid on items to win. Many sellers on eBay have clothing that they sell in lots, meaning they may have a few shirts, pants, or other items together in one auction. You can get a great deal and save a lot of money by purchasing clothing on eBay in lots. Just browse eBay for a particular type of clothing and find the best deal. You can also email sellers to see if they will take a certain price for a lot of clothes to gain a bargain.

  5. Step 5

Craigslist is another great place to find clothing for cheap. People set up ads on Craigslist much like a garage sale and let you know their asking price and if they'll ship to you or you must pick up the item. You can also request items from Craigslist by placing your own ad for clothing wanted. People respond to your ad with items that you are looking for and your able to find a clothing bargain. Be sure to be accurate and detailed in the articles of clothing that you are looking for so you don't get a lot of unwanted responses.

  6. Step 6

Look into consignment shops to save money on clothing purchases. Consignment shops offer discount pricing on gently used and brand new clothing that people take in to get rid of and make a small profit on. Consignment shops offer men's, women's, and children's clothing and usually have a return policy if items don't fit. You can also take your gently used and new clothing to consignment shops to earn extra money. Some also offer you credit for your clothes toward the purchase of clothing in their store.
