Step 1
Wedding Toast and Wedding Speeches – Protocol
There is a traditional and non-traditional order to follow for making wedding toasts.
Traditional Protocol
• The best man toasts the bride or the bride and groom first.
• The groom toasts his bride, the best man, the newlywed’s parents, and the bridesmaids.
• The bride toasts her groom and the groomsmen.
• This can be followed by a wedding toast by a close friend/relative.
• The father of the bride is now offered the stage for a toast or a wedding speech so he can thank all the guests, on behalf of himself and his wife (or the Mother of the bride) for celebrating the marriage with them.
Non-traditional Protocol
The order of those making the wedding toasts will be random and suited towards the wishes of the newlyweds. -
Step 2
Wedding Toast Outline
• Start your wedding toast or speech by recognizing the wedding couple and wishing them well.
• Humor or telling a story about either the bride or groom is a good ice breaker and will help settle in to making a memorable toast.
• Tell the bride and groom why you are glad you know them and how important being part of their wedding means to you.
• Impart words of wisdom to give the happy couple.
• Ask everyone to raise their glass and toast the newlyweds. -
Step 3
Wedding Toast Wording
When you are going to be a member of the wedding party, who is expected to give a wedding toast or wedding speech, be prepared. Take some time with the outline in Step #2 and write down thoughts for each part. If you need further inspiration you can visit the library and look through wedding toast books or use these free wedding toast and wedding speech websites on the Internet.
