Step 1
Determine what the product will be. Herbs? Flowers? Vegetables? All of it? Requirements should be something that grows well and produces a lot of product.
-
Step 2
Locate a place to sell. Possibilities include farmers' markets and road side stands. The most necessary ingredient is traffic.
-
Step 3
Check out the legalities. Selling something even as simple as tomatoes might require a seller's permit. Most municipalities won't allow just anyone to throw up a road side stand. Similarly, farmers' markets will probably require an application process. Some may even have waiting lists. Check into the requirements before you proceed.
-
Step 4
Obtain supplies. At a minimum a seller will need a table to sell from, a scale, bags or boxes for produce, and a way to make change.
-
Step 5
Advertise. Use inexpensive methods like signs and Craigslist to get the word out about products and locations. Inexpensive flyers telling buyers where the seller will be and when are also a good idea. Encourage word of mouth. Make the business memorable with a catcy name or theme.
-
Step 6
Increase profits. Look for ways to make the business more profitable by finding lower cost suppliers and keeping an eye on competitors' prices. Consider adding other products like baked goods, canned goods, or even non-food items.

on 7/27/2009 Well thought out advice. This is my first year growing my own crops and it is amazing walking through plants and vines and picking my own!! We had a farmers market open this year in our town and many local farmers come to sell their crops there at little tables. You've given me great advice to plan for selling my own crops next year! Thanks!
