How to Remove Devitrification from Fused Glass

Even when you take care and use precautions, sometimes fused glass will emerge from the kiln with an ugly hazy look that is cause by devitrification. A sand blaster or glass bead blaster can be used to remove devitrification. This tutorial will explain how.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • sand blaster or bead blaster
  • glass fusing kiln
  1. Step 1

    Set up your sand blaster or bead blaster. Put on your protective gear.

  2. Step 2

    Wash your fused glass piece and place it in the sand blaster or bead blaster. Sand blast the surface of the glass to remove the ugly residual left by devitrification.

  3. Step 3

    Take care to hold the sand blaster perpendicular to the glass in the spot where the glass is tarnished with devitrification. Blast evenly until the ugly residual left by devitrification is removed and the desired effect is reached.

  4. Step 4

    To get create a mat finish, continue sand blasting the entire fused glass piece until the surface is mat and you like the look.

  5. Step 5

    If you do not want a mat finish, you can clean and then fire polish the sand blasted glass using the following schedule as a guide: to

    Ramp ºF/Hr Target temperature Hold for
    1 350 1410 10
    2 Full 960 15

    Once fire polished, the mat look of the sand blasted area will be gone.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to wear a dust mask to protect your lungs when blasting.
  • Never leave a kiln unattended when firing.
  • Take fire safety precautions when working with a kiln.
