How to Sandblast Glass
Sand blasting is a way to etch glass without using chemicals. Sand blasting can be used to remove surface texture from glass, including mica that has been fired onto the surface of fused glass. Sand blasting is also an effective way to remove devitrification from fused glass and other kiln-fired glass objects.

1
To create a pattern etched on glass, you will need to use a resist, or a substance which will protect the glass beneath it from blasting. Using wax, tape, contact paper or other resist, cut out a pattern and affix it to the glass. The glass will not be etched wherever you place the resist, so consider the importance of positive and negative space when applying your resist. Be sure the resist is well-affixed or it will be blasted off in the sand-blasting process.

2
Put on a dust mask to protect your lungs. Place the resist-covered glass in the sand-blasting cabinet and turn on and secure the components of the sandblaster.
-
3
Take care to hold the blaster perpendicular to the glass to be etched. Holding the blaster at an angle may lift the resist, causing a blurred line or leaving no pattern at all. Blast evenly until the desired effect is reached.

4
Remove the now-etched glass from the blaster. Rinse the glass with water to remove any excess blasting material. Remove the resist and wash off any remaining adhesive. Dry. The glass will be etched in all the places not covered by the resist.
