Things You'll Need:
- Ladder tall enough to reach ceiling
- 2-3 wire connectors
-
Step 1
Before you begin, make sure the electricity to the wires you will be connecting is turned off. The safest thing to do is to turn the circuit breaker to the wiring off.
-
Step 2
Place your ladder where you can easily reach the wiring. Make sure it is on a steady surface.
-
Step 3
Different fans will sometimes have different colors of wires. If your fan has a green wire, that is a grounding wire. The grounding wire coming out of your ceiling electrical box will be either green or bare copper wire. Find the grounding wire from the ceiling and twist the ground wire from the fan around it lightly.
-
Step 4
Place the top of one of your plastic wire connectors over the two wires and twist clockwise until the wires are tight.
-
Step 5
The white wires are your neutral wires. You will have one in your fan and one coming from the electrical box. Place these two ends together and lightly twist the ends like you did above. Place the top of a wire connector over the two wires and twist clockwise until the wires are tight.
-
Step 6
The remaining wires will be your hot wires, meaning they conduct electricity to the fan. Since your fan is a single-switch type, there will only be one hot wire coming from the electrical box. These are usually black. There will be two hot wires coming from the fan. They can be black, blue, gray or black/white. You will take the two ends of your hot wires coming from the fan and connect them to the one hot wire coming from the electrical box. Twist all three ends together and connect with a wire connector.
