Things You'll Need:
- Worksheets, books, software or videos
-
Step 1
Start with common nouns. You can find printable worksheets online for helping kids learn basic French nouns. Beginner French workbooks are available through online bookstores and major book retailers as well as parent-teacher supply stores that sell flashcards, games and activities for teaching French nouns to children.
-
Step 2
Add French verbs once kids know enough nouns to attempt to string together a sentence. Conjugating French verbs is a more difficult skill, but there are plenty of resources online and in print for learning enough basic French verbs that you can teach to your kids.
-
Step 3
Invest in French learning software for kids, like Jump Start French for younger children or Rosetta Stone or Pimsleur for middle school and up. Also for younger children, you might want to check out videos that teach basic French for kids. These multimedia approaches are great for helping kids learn to imitate the vocal qualities of native speakers.
-
Step 4
Expose your children to plenty of opportunities to communicate, in French, with a native speaker. This is one of the best ways to immerse a child in the French language, short of visiting France.
-
Step 5
Watch children's television shows in French. Satellite television often offers foreign language settings and you can program your internet browser to receive sites that are in French as well as English.
-
Step 6
Learn French as a family, so the knowledge can be used more frequently and everyone can help each other succeed.
