How to Set Up a Baitcaster

Bait-caster fishing reels differ from spinning reels in that they don't have a bail to flip when you cast. Bait-caster reels are semi-enclosed with a spool for the line that sits perpendicular to the fishing rod. This design provides superior drag to spinning reels, but makes it difficult to use with cast and retrieve lures. The proper set up of a bait-caster reel is crucial. The drag and line tension need to be set properly to hook and land fish and to cast well.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fishing rod with bait-caster reel and line
  • Plastic cylindrical sliding fishing weight holder with snap swivel
  • 1 ounce lead weight
  • Treble hook
  1. Step 1

Adjust the drag by manipulating the circular star-shaped metal piece that is set against the fishing reel handle used to reel in the line. This star-shaped wheel spins back and forth to adjust the drag. The tighter you spin the wheel forward, the tighter the reel locks on the line. The looser you spin the wheel back toward you, the easier it is to pull line off the reel after casting.

  2. Step 2

Turn the reel handle a complete turn as if reeling in line. This will make sure the reel is locked and no line can be freely pulled while casting. Test this by pulling on the line to make sure there is tension. Now adjust the star-shaped wheel to a position that takes a gentle tug to pull line off the spool. You should be able to pull line off the spool when the reel is locked. When wrapped around your finger the line should start to press into your skin before the drag breaks and line peels off. This gives you a better chance to hook fish because they can run with the bait and take line with little effort.

  3. Step 3

Turn the smaller wheel attached to the side of the reel that is used to adjust the tension on the line. Click the button to release the reel for casting. Your line with hook and sinker should fall to the ground. This will let the line peel off the reel smoothly and easily when you cast. It also will let it go farther.

  4. Step 4

Cut a 2-foot-long length of fishing line. Tie the baitcaster tackle set up onto the end of the line. Take the end of the fishing line on your reel and pole combination and run it through the plastic cylinder of the fishing weight slide. Tie the fishing line to a barrel swivel.

  5. Step 5

Tie the length of fishing line cut in the previous step to a treble hook. Tie the other end of the line to the barrel swivel. Attach the lead sinker to the snap swivel on the plastic slide. Bait the hook and go fishing.

Tips & Warnings
  • Because the drag is set loose, you might have to tighten it for a big fish. The drag should be used freely on a baitcaster.
