How to Make a Real Toga
The toga is reminiscent of Roman culture. It was restricted to men after the second century B.C. and became a symbol of a man's Roman citizenship, age, wealth and office in the society. Because soldiers could not wear it, it was also a symbol of peace. In these modern times, togas are more often used for college parties or Halloween costumes. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Purchase fabric. Ancient Romans made their togas with wool, but you can use cotton or any other fabric that drapes well. The length of the fabric should be equal to your height, and the width should be three to four times your height.
-
2
Locate the center of the longest side of your fabric. Mark this point using tailor's chalk.
-
-
3
Mark points for a semicircle using the midpoint mark as a starting point. Mark the points with the tailor's chalk. The semicircle should take up most of the fabric.
-
4
Draw lines through the points to create the semicircle, then cut out the shape.
-
5
Fold the raw edges over 1/4 inch onto the wrong side, and iron flat. Fold the edges again by another 1/4 inch, and iron flat. Sew the seam with a sewing machine or by hand.

6
Place one end of the toga over your left shoulder, and pull it down until it brushes your knees. Reach for the other end of the toga hanging behind you, and bring it around your waist to the front. The rounded edge of the fabric should be close to your ankles. Throw the other end over your left shoulder, and arrange the folds.

Tips & Warnings
If you would rather not sew, use hemming tape to finish the raw edges. Romans wore tunics under their togas. If you do not have one, wear a t-shirt and a pair of shorts.
