A keyboard instrument can be an electronic keyboard, a piano or organ. A traditional piano has 88 keys and a range a little over seven octaves. Electronic keyboards come in all sizes, from two- or three-octave models centered on middle C to full size. Regardless of the keyboard instrument you choose, the notes are the same. Learn how you can easily recognize keyboard notes on your keyboard and in musical notation.

Things You'll Need:

  • Keyboard
  • Music notation chart
  • Keyboard note chart
  1. Step 1

Begin with middle C. Locate middle C by using a keyboard note guide available in music stores or online free (see Resources).

  2. Step 2

Keep a music notation chart handy that shows the keys on the musical staff as they relate to the keys on your keyboard. You can purchase one at a music store or find one online free (see Resources).

  3. Step 3

Play scales. As boring as this may seem, playing major and minor scales is not only a good way to help you memorize your notes, it's a good way to strengthen your fingers. Major and minor scales have a set pattern that remains the same. All that changes is the scale you play, which is named after your starting note. You can buy a book of scales at a music store or use one online (see Resources).

  4. Step 4

Start playing simple songs. Reading sheet music is a way to quickly recognize notes and where they are on the keyboard. You can find simple keyboard sheet music online (see resources).
