How to Prune with a Pole Saw
Pole saws are gardening tools that allow you to prune from the safety and comfort of the ground, reducing the need for a ladder. Pole saws have toothed cutting blades mounted on adjustable extension poles with grips at the user end for control and maneuvering. Pole saws can be manual, electric powered or gas powered. Leverage in cutting with the blade is created by an added rope or chain function that multiplies the strength of of your cutting stroke. Determine the branch to be cut and raise your pole saw into the canopy, teeth side resting on the branch, at the place you wish to cut.

Using a push-pull sawing motion, with both hands on the pole saw, begin to cut through the tree bark with the saw.

Scribe the cut location into the bark around the circumference of the branch, changing hand positions on the pole to effectively scribe the underside of the branch bark.

Rest the pole saw blade in the scribed line and use pressure to make clean even passes through the branch until it falls to the ground or can be pulled out of the canopy with the tip of the pole saw.
