How to Make a Web Page for Beginners

Everyone can have their own Web page and it doesn't have to cost you anything. In fact, if you're reading this it means you have a connection to the Internet and that probably means you were given a small amount of Web server space when you signed up for your connection to the Internet. Read this and you'll learn how to get your own personalized Web page on the Internet for all to see.

Things You'll Need:

  • Web browser Microsoft Word Web server space (through your Internet service provider) Username and password from your Internet service provider Windows operating system

    Create your Web page

  1. Step 1

    Start Microsoft Word. Look in the lower left hand section of your screen and click on the Windows icon.
    Select Programs > Microsoft Office > Microsoft Office Word

  2. Step 2
     

    Type in the information you would like to have on your Web page.

  3. Step 3
     

    Click on the icon in the upper left hand corner.

  4. Step 4
     

    Save the page by selecting the Save As option.

  5. Step 5
     

    Continue the Save process by selecting the option Other Formats.

  6. Step 6
     

    Give the Web page a file name. The Web page must have an extension of .htm or .html as shown in the image.

  7. Step 7
     

    Click the Save button.
    Your Web page has now been created.
    You now need to put the Web page on the server.

  8. Put your Web page on the server

  9. Step 1
     

    Click the Windows start button and choose Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
    A black window should now be displayed.

  10. Step 2

    Connect to the server. Type in: ftp nameofyourserver.com then press the Enter key. You should have been furnished the server name by your Internet service provider.

  11. Step 3

    Enter your Username and Password. You will be prompted to input your credentials. Use the information you received from your Internet service provider.

  12. Step 4

    Put the server into binary mode by typing in: bin
    The system will not respond; rather it will wait for another command from you.

  13. Step 5

    Put the Web page on the server by typing in: mput index.htm
    The server will then let you know when it has finished sending the file over.

  14. Step 6

    View your Web page on the server. Start a browser. Your Internet service provider should have given you the URL to view your server space. Enter that URL in the browser and you should see your Web page on the Internet.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you name your Web page index.htm or index.html, you do not have to include the Web page name in the URL, you can simply enter the name of the directory.
