DreamScene was one of the Windows Ultimate Extras offered by Microsoft for the Windows Vista Ultimate operating system. Allowing users to replace static image backgrounds on their desktop with video, DreamScene granted users an entirely new way to customize the look of their computer. It's easy to use DreamScene; the act of setting a video to be used as a DreamScene background is no more difficult than setting a static image. DreamScene clips and video can also be replaced with static images just as easily, should you decide to do so.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate
  1. Step 1

Ensure that you have DreamScene installed on your computer. Open Windows Update (either from the Start menu or by double-clicking the "Windows Update" icon in your system tray if you have updates ready to install), then click on the "View Available Extras" text under the "Windows Ultimate Extras" section of the Windows Update window. Scroll down to the "Windows Ultimate Extras" section of the update list; if you see "DreamScene" listed, select it and click "Install." Note that if you install DreamScene now, you will have to reboot your computer before you can use it.

  2. Step 2

Right-click your desktop background. Choose "Personalize" from the menu that opens; it should be the last item in the menu. The menu will close, and the "Personalization" window will open.

  3. Step 3

Click the "Desktop Background" option in the "Personalization" window. This will cause your desktop selection screen to open, with the folder that your current desktop image is located in being the default folder for you to select a new desktop from.

  4. Step 4

Click the "Picture Location" drop-down menu located above the image previews in order to change your folder. Select the "Windows DreamScene" option to switch the current folder to the one that your DreamScenes clips are located in. If you wish to choose a different video file instead of a DreamScene clip, click the "Browse..." button and navigate to the location of your preferred video file instead.

  5. Step 5

Click the DreamScene clip or video file that you wish to select once in order to preview it. You can set the orientation of the video in the same manner that you would change the orientation of a stationary image by using the options at the bottom of the screen. To finalize your selection, click the "OK" button. The DreamScene clip or video file will replace your current desktop and will loop once the end of the video is reached. You may close the windows you have opened during this process.

Tips & Warnings
  • The Windows Vista Volume Mixer can be used to mute DreamScene videos in case you choose a video that contains sound that you don't want to hear.
  • DreamScene, like all other Windows Ultimate Extras, is only available for Windows Vista Ultimate. It cannot be installed onto other versions of the operating system.
