How to Make Chicago Style Beef On Italian Bread
A popular sandwich in Chicago is juicy beef slices on heavy Italian bread topped with hot or sweet peppers. However, you don't have to live in Chicago or even go there to enjoy Italian meat and bread. You can make this delicious beef Italian sandwich at home. Things You'll Need
- 4 lb. rump roast Paper towels Bowl 2 tsp. black pepper 2 tsp. dried oregano 2 tsp. garlic powder 2 tsp. Italian seasoning 2 cups water 2 beef bouillon cubes Shallow baking pan Sharp knife 1 large onion 2 bell peppers 1 tbsp. olive oil Skillet Spoon Saucepan

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Sit the roast on the counter and let it come to room temperature, about an hour. Rinse the roast off in cold water and pat dry with paper towels. Cut the onion and green peppers into thin slices.

Combine the black pepper, oregano, garlic powder and Italian seasoning in a bowl and mix together. Rub half the seasonings in the bowl all over the roast, and add the remaining seasonings to a saucepan.

Put two cups of water and two beef bouillon cubes in the saucepan with the seasonings and stir. Heat on the stove until the bouillon cubes are dissolved, then sit on the counter.

Place the rump roast in the baking pan, and pour the seasoned broth into the pan. Bake uncovered for 1 hour and 15 minutes, then turn the meat over and finish cooking for another hour and 15 minutes. Take the pan out of the oven, and place the roast on a plate to cool.

Add oil to the skillet, and cook the peppers and onion for about 10 minutes on medium heat, or until softened. Cut the meat into thin slices, and put in a big pan. Pour the broth over the sliced beef in the pan, and heat until hot.

Slice the Italian bread into six-inch sections. Cut each section down the middle but not all the way through.

Spoon some of the broth directly on the bread. Fill the inside of the bread with the meat, and top with the onion and peppers. Your Chicago style beef on Italian bread is now ready to eat.
