  1. Step 1

It's important to always ask anyone who contacts you for a sell or anything else how they got your information. Now, they can give you lots of fancy stories, but listen closely. If you don't recognize any of thing things or resources that they tell you - chances are - you didn't sign up for anything. As far as short answers, if they say you got your name and number through the phone book. Ask to go into detail about why. If they can't come up for a legit reason, don't waste your time.

  2. Step 2

Get anything and everything in writing if your going to do business with you. This is for legal reasons, as well as letting them know your serious. If they refuse to sign any papers with statements about the situation - you know they are running a scam.

It's always good to pay close attention to the behavior. If they are very persistent for you to act quickly - tuck tail and run. Badgering only means they want it to be done and over with before you realize they're a con. Also, pay close attention to eye contact. If you see these people face to face - look them in the eye. If they don't meet your eye contact, chances are they are lying about something.

Check for red flags such as:
Cash only - this could mean they don't want any trails or tracks left behind. Promises that seem unreal - anything too good to be true, normally IS. Rudeness and guilt - anyone or any company starts to pressure you into making a decision or becomes offensive - you should be on alert for a scam ahead.
