Step 1
Be realistic about your goals for the foal and what your mare can produce. The number one rule is to breed like to like to get the best offspring.
-
Step 2
Take conformation photos of your mare and compare them with prospective stallions. Both mare and stallion should be close to the same height and build to get consistent results. Find a stallion that complements and improves your mare. For example, if your mare's neck is a little short, find a stallion with long well-set neck that is a conformational strength of that stallion.
-
Step 3
Talk to the stallion owner or better yet visit him in person. Disposition is a HUGE component in the foal. If you don't like your mare's disposition or cannot handle or ride her, you would be ill-advised to breed her. Talk with the stallion owner and if possible owners of some of the stallions get to get a better feel as to what kind of disposition he produces. Just remember, a stallion with a wonderful disposition will not override a mare with a bad disposition.

Step 4
Check the stallions status. For example a quarter horse stud with Impressive in his lineage should be tested for HYPP and should be N/N.
