Things You'll Need:
- Target Audience Knowledge
- Keyword Tools
- Time for Brainstorming
-
Step 1
Choose a Topic
Writers have success building audiences on the Internet when selecting subjects that have a specific interest. Specific subject articles and web sites rank higher than general interest articles or web sites. Here is how to take a general interest and narrow it to a specific interest.
Business Dress
This topic is too large for a writer to compete well against the existing business sites which cover this topic and many similar ones: Forbes, Business Week, Wall Street Journal Online, etc. -
Step 2
Narrow Your Thinking
Ask yourself: who are you writing for? Business executives? Okay, too broad? How about “cash-strapped business executives.”
Now we have a specific angle to develop. -
Step 3
Make Your Specific Article Unique
Finding business suits for the cash strapped business executive.
This allows the writer to cover great deals at department stores, discount stores and even neighborhood thrift stores. This could be entertaining and be the type of article that gets “buzz” on the Internet. Put a video with it and it can make the “buzz” that much stronger. -
Step 4
Use Keyword Tools to determine interest level
For some articles, you want to use keyword tools like Google Adwords or Wordtracker to determine how much search volume exists for the topic. -
Step 5
Evaluate the Search Engine Results
For some niche topics, allow one to three months to evaluate search engine results and determine if the niche subject was successful.
One popular article of mine on gasoline took up to 8 months before generating significant search engine traffic.
