Make a Custom Quilt from T-shirts - Front to Back Quilt

Sometimes you want the back of the quilt to have quilt blocks well as the front. This can be useful if you have a large collection. It is also handy if you have a group of shirts that have matching fronts and backs such as team jerseys or Greek event shirts.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Batting
  • Interfacing
  • Sewing Supples
  • Twice as many shirt blocks as usual
  1. Step 1

Following Parts I and II of my eHow articles prepare the quilt blocks and make two quilt tops. One quilt top is actually the back. Be careful when assembling the back because the shirts that are left to right on the front should be right to left on the back.

  2. Step 2

    Big Quilt Sandwich.
This is the tricky part. The front and back are the same size and you must match it perfectly on the quilt sandwich.

  3. Step 3

Lay the quilt back face down on the floor. Lay the batting on the quilt back. Lay the quilt top face up on top of the sandwich. Fidget around with it until the corners and edges match.

  4. Step 4

    Start pin basting the sandwich.
Start at the corners, check to be sure the top ad bottom match up, and pin. Continue this process for all the cornerstones and along the edges.

  5. Step 5

Carefully pin the cornerstones toward the center of the quilt. As you do feel carefully to be sure they match front to back. When all the cornerstones are matched and pinned, match and pin the sashing strips.

  6. Step 6

When you are finished pinning check your work from the back to be sure you did a good job. From this point on finish the quilt as usual.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cornerstones are the little squares at the interstections
  • Sashing strips are the long strips between squares
  • Use two pins on sashing strips on the outside edge of the quilt.
