When working with large, fresh calla lilies, submerging them can be tough if you don't know how to prepare the callas to sink and not float in the vase.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Large vase
  • Large Calla lilies
  • Water
  • Patience!
  1. Step 1

Fill your large vase half full of water and set aside.

  2. Step 2

Lay your fresh callas on a towel, out of water and lay them out on the sidewalk/driveway.

  3. Step 3

Wait a few hours. When working with white or light pink, be careful that the sun is not to hot on them, you don't want them to brown. If you are worried, you can put them in the shade but give them about 6 hours if you do.

  4. Step 4

Gather them up and take them to your work station. They only need to be fresh-cut if the stems are unattractive. Begin submerging them one at a time or in a large grouping and twist them around each other, as they slowly start to take up water, they become easy to bend without actually breaking and they sink. Twirl them around a bit in the half-full vase to shake off the water bubbles, then fill the vase to the top slowly.

Tips & Warnings
  • This holds true for the mini calla varieties also, but they dehydrate faster so don't leave them out of water for more than 4 hours.
