Step 1
Organize your entire home before you open your home office for business. Make sure that everything has a specific space and that those items are in the space designated for them. Free your home from unnecessary and clutter. Be sure to keep it that way on a daily basis.
-
Step 2
Choose a specific space for your home office. Keep only the items you will be using for your work there. Set rules so that your office space isn't invaded by non-work items, people, pets and other distractions. Remember you can deduct a portion of your mortgage or rent for the space you use as a home office.
-
Step 3
Buy the perfect used desk for you and the type of work you do. Make sure that it is the right height to properly fit you. There should be enough storage to keep all your work-related materials as well as photos or pictures. Keep in mind all the papers, computer accessories, fax machine and lighting fixtures you will need to use on a daily basis.
-
Step 4
Get yourself a comfortable used chair that will fit into your office space. Make sure your chair is ergonomically correct for you, your body type and the type of work you will be doing. Buy a chair that is adjustable and has storage pockets for small items such a pens, cell phones as well as a cup holder so you won't have to worry as much about spills on your desk.
-
Step 5
Get yourself plenty of storage containers. Small plastic containers, properly labeled, can hold pens and pencils, business cards and date books. Hang a plastic shoe rack behind a door or on the side of your desk to store small books, push pins as well additional office supplies and other necessary items.
