Things You'll Need:
- 5 quarts of oil
- New oil filter to fit your vehicle
- Adjustable wrench
- Rags
- Plastic glove
- Small tarp
- Strap/belt wrench to fit the oil filter.
-
Step 1
The ramps and the drain container. This picture shows two very important tools to have to do this job, drive up ramps and a proper container to catch the draining oil. It's OK to do this with a cold engine. It is not necessary to warm it up.
-
Step 2
Getting readySet the drive up ramps approximately the width of your car. Position the tarp in between and put the oil catch container in a handy location so it is within easy reach once you get under the car.
-
Step 3
Vehicle up on the rampsDrive up close to the ramps and reposition them so they line up with the front wheels. Slowly drive your vehicle up the drive up ramps being careful not to go too far and drive off the end of the ramps at the front. Keep one foot on the brake and one foot on gas pedal and ease up the ramp.
-
Step 4
Plastic GloveIf you have a plastic glove now is time to put it on.
-
Step 5
Oil Drain PlugPosition the oil drain container under the oil pan and take the big cap off so the oil can drain into the container. Loosen the plug on the bottom of the oil pan with the adjustable wrench and remove it with your gloved hand.
-
Step 6
Oil filter locationOn this particular car model the oil filter is on the drivers side at the rear of the engine. Kind of hard to get at but it is possible. You will need the belt wrench here to get it loose then you can remove it by hand. Put a layer of oil on the gasket of the new oil filter and screw it back in it's place and get it quite hand tight. Might want to test the tightness with the wrench but don't get it too tight.
-
Step 7
Where to add the oilPut the plug back in the bottom of the oil pan and snug it up. Don't get it too tight and for heavens sake don't strip the threads or get them cross threaded. Remove the oil cap on the front of the engine by turning to the left and lift it out. Put five quarts of suitable oil in the engine and put the cap back in place. Start the engine up and check for leaks. If you have no leaks you can back down off the ramps. After you are back on level ground check the oil level on the dip stick just as a precaution. The oil level should read full. Wipe up any oil spills that might have occurred.
