Grape jelly attracts Orioles

The Baltimore Oriole is a beautiful bird. Attracting them into your yard is actually quite easy. Read this quick article to learn the simple tricks.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Yard
  • Oriole feeder
  • Oranges
  • Grape Jelly
  1. Step 1

Choose a location for your Baltimore Oriole feeder. Keep them separate from other bird feeders. The higher off the ground your feeders are, the better. This is because Oriole nests are over 20 feet off the ground!

  2. Step 2

Buy a commercial Oriole feeder. These are very similar to a hummingbird feeder, but are often orange in color. When you buy the feeder, it will likely come with a package to use in making the nectar for inside the feeder. You can make your own nectar!

  3. Step 3

Make your own Oriole nectar. Boil 1 part sugar to 3 parts water. Allow to cool and add to the feeder.

  4. Step 4

Use oranges. Make an orange feeder by taking a flat piece of wood, nailing a nail straight through it so the nail is sticking straight up, and place a half orange on top of the nail. Face the inside of the orange upwards to the Oriole can get at the nectar. You could simply place an orange halve on a plate or dish as well.

  5. Step 5

Use grape jelly. Some commercial Baltimore oriole feeders have a place for grape jelly to be used. You could also simply put some on a plate or dish. Some people empty an orange halve, and place grape jelly in the empty orange!

Tips & Warnings
  • It's best to try attracting the Baltimore Oriole in the spring during migration and mating season.
  • Replace the food every few days or as needed.
  • It's best if you have at least one tall tree near the feeding area.
  • Keep food off of your deck if you have bear in the area. They would love the free snack!
