Step 1
Prep for painting exterior of house.
First things first; always properly prepare the outside of your house for painting. Pressure wash the surface, allow proper drying time, and caulk any holes and imperfections before starting. See "How to Prep the Outside of your House for Painting" below for additional information. -
Step 2
Choose a main color to paint your home.
Consider what color you want your house to be; what color do you want to greet you, each and every time you pull into your driveway? The main house paint color schemes are usually warm (deeper shades of colors), cool (lighter shades of colors), and neutral (earthy tones). -
Step 3
Choose an accent color.
An accent color is what allows you to bring attention to certain parts of your home with a (most often) brighter shade of paint. Exterior house paint trim is often white, as well as shutters of homes; the accent serves to bring contrast to decorative home details. Step 4
Consider your surroundings.
Before you jump into a home improvement project so big, consider the setting that your home sits in. Are you in a crowded neighborhood, the woods, or on the ocean? Take all of these variables into consideration before you start carrying out your exterior house paint color scheme so that you will be pleased with your finished home project.
