Step 1
To prevent weeds from continuing to grow in your garden, you first need to remove as many weeds as possible. To do this you can either hoe or pull them out, or spray them with a herbicide such as Roundup. If you use Roundup, be sure to only spay the weeds because it will kill your plants as well if any liquid ends up on them.

Step 2
Spread Preen throughout your garden area. There are many different kinds of Preen, such as specific ones for vegetable gardens, regular weed prevention, and weed prevention with fertilizer. Preen will prevent weeds from growing all summer long.

Step 3
Lay a layer of mulch around 3 inches thick on top of the soil in your garden. Bag mulch from your local hardware store or gas station will do just fine. Lift up any foliage and spread mulch up to the base of the plant. This will prevent weeds from coming up through your plants. Spreading mulch will also cut down on your watering time by trapping in moisture.

Step 4
Pull any stay weeds that appear in your garden. Try and get the entire root. By getting the entire root you have a higher chance of the weed not coming back.
