Things You'll Need:
- a pocket mask
-
Step 1
First, Shake and Shout. Grasp the person's shoulder and while gently shaking them yell, "Are you ok? Are you ok?" If there is no response, then be sure the person is on a hard, dry surface.
-
Step 2
If you are alone, go and call 911. If not, Tell one particular person to go and call 911.
-
Step 3
Next, Gently tip the person's head back to open the person's airway. Place your ear down by the person's mouth and look toward the person's chest. This is when you look, listen and feel. Look for the person's chest to rise, listen for the person breathing, and feel for the breath to hit your face.
-
Step 4
If the person is not breathing, place your pocket mask over the person's mouth and administer 2 breaths. As you give the breaths, you should be able to watch the person's chest rise.
-
Step 5
Next, Place your hands one over the other, interlocking your fingers, on the breast bone right at the nipple line. Straighten your arms so that you place enough force to the chest to compress the heart. You should do 30 compressions and then give the person 2 more breaths.
-
Step 6
This cycle of 30 compressions and 2 breaths should be continued in 4 cycles and then you reevaluate the patient. Meaning start back at step 3 with look, listen and feel.
-
Step 7
If an AED is available, it should be placed on the patient as soon as possible. AED's are simple to use. When you turn them on, they tell you what to do next.
