Knitting is a relaxing hobby that can be enjoyed anywhere. The knitting of most patterns--a sweater, knitted hat or doll--requires a combination of the knit and purl stitch. This is referred to in knitting instructions as the stockinette stitch. This article assumes you already know how to knit both the knit and purl stitch.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Knitting needles
  • yarn
  1. Step 1

    Knit one row, turn and Purl back.

  2. Step 2
    Front side
    Front side

    Continue in the pattern of Knit one row, Purl one row for six rows. Look at the front of the knitted section and notice it has a smooth and finished appearance.

  3. Step 3
    Back side
    Back side

    Turn the piece over and notice that the back or Purl side is not smooth and has a bumpy or unfinished look.

Tips & Warnings
  • Follow knitting instructions exactly. A wrong count will cause the sweater to either be too large or too small. Buy the size yarn recommended in the instructions for a correct fit.
