Hang Plants & Flowers

When space is limited, creating several hanging baskets overflowing with flowers or herbs allows to you grow more plants in the same space and adds height and depth to the area. Whether you are looking for space-saving techniques or simply like the look of baskets and pots filled with trailing vines and flowers, making hanging baskets or pots and hanging the plants for display is quick and easy.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Plastic plant pots (with or without hangers)
  • Drill
  • Heavy wire pliers

How to Hang Plants & Flowers

  1. Step 1

Fill pots with your choice of trailing or vining flowers. A visit to the nursery reveals the many choices in plants suitable for hanging baskets.

  2. Step 2

Attach the hangers to the baskets or pots. Many come with plastic hangers that are simply clipped onto the pot. Look for the indentations around the base of the pot and slide the clips of the hanger over the rim. Listen for the click to indicate the hanger is securely in place. Repeat with all clips. Most hangers have three clips that secure it to the pot, but yours may have more, depending on the size and style.

  3. Step 3

Prepare pots that do not have accompanying hangers by drilling three small holes at equal distance around the rim of the pot, about ½ inch below the rim. Cut three heavy wires approximately 18 inches in length. Insert the end of the wire through the holes you drilled in the pot and twist with pliers to secure. Repeat with remaining wires. Bring the wires together over the top of the pot and twist together to secure. Bend the tops of the wires to form an arched hook.

  4. Step 4

Hang from shepherd hooks, plant hooks or nails from the edge of the deck or patio roof or from any structure that is solid enough to hold the weight of the plant. Suspend from tree branches or hooks attached to trees for a visually appearing display.

Tips & Warnings
  • Hanging pots can be prepared before filling with plants, if preferred.
  • Check that the structure is solid and will withstand the weight of the plant before hanging. Hanging pots need to be watered frequently; usually at least once a day in hot, dry weather.
