When someone enlists in a branch of the U.S. military, a record of their service is begun that is kept in the national archives. Although service records are logged in the national archives, they are not a matter of public record. But by following the procedure necessary, you can obtain a service record.

    How to Find Service Records

  1. Step 1

Get permission. You're more likely to receive information on someone's service record if you have the written permission from the veteran or the veteran's next-of-kin. Without the veteran's permission, the general public is only allowed access to information included in the Freedom of Information Act.

  2. Step 2

Submit the request. The request for information is required by federal law to be submitted in writing. To request information, you must fill out an SF-180 form, sign it and date it. You must also include the person's complete name used while in service, service number, social security number, branch of service, date of birth, place of birth, and dates of service.

  3. Step 3

Pay. Limited information requests do not usually carry a fee, but expanded information requests can incur a charge.

  4. Step 4

Wait. Do not submit multiple requests. A request will usually take about 90 days to complete. If you plan to send a follow-up request, send it after 90 days.

Tips & Warnings
  • The Freedom of Information Act grants limited access to information including a veteran's name, service number, dates of service, military branch, rank, non-classified geographical locations, education, salary, awards, duty status, photograph, and source of commission.
