How to Replace a Dell Dimension 8100 Graphics Card
Though by no means cutting edge by modern standards, the Dell Dimension 8100 still offers a decent computing option with several upgrade options available for users. One way in which a Dell Dimension 8100 can be upgraded is by installing or replacing a graphics card. The Dimension 8100 features an AGP graphics card slot, allowing more powerful cards to be used than are available for computers that only feature PCI slots. Replacing an old graphics card should only take a few minutes, and the difference that a new graphics card can make should be immediately noticeable when you next boot up your computer.

1
Shut down your computer and unplug it to prevent accidental electric shock. Lay the Dell Dimension 8100 case on its right side, removing the left side panel by unscrewing the screws holding it in place and sliding it back. Should the panel not come off easily, look for a release handle on the back of the case, which will slide down and allow the panel to be removed.
-
2
Locate the old graphics card, most likely in the AGP slot. The AGP slot is the one that is closest to the computer processor, and should be both larger and set back further than the PCI slots below it. Unscrew the screw holding the graphics card in place on the computer's expansion port, setting the screw aside.

3
Pull the old graphics card carefully up and out of the case. If any cables from the power supply or other components are attached to the card, disconnect them before removing the card.
-
4
Align your new graphics card over the AGP slot on the Dell Dimension 8100's motherboard with the video connection panel facing toward the empty expansion slot left by your previous video card. Insert the new card firmly into the slot, making sure that the connectors slide all of the way into the slot and the screw divot lines up with the screw hole in the side of your case.
-
5
Screw the previously removed screw into place in order to further secure your video card and prevent slippage. Replace the side panel of your Dell Dimension 8100 case, set the case upright and plug it back in.
-
6
Boot up your computer, allowing the operating system to load as normal. The operating system should recognize your new hardware and prompt you to install the drivers for the card; you should either have the drivers on a disc supplied with the card or downloaded from the website of the card manufacturer. Run the installation program for the drivers, then reboot your computer to let them take effect within the operating system.

Tips & Warnings
A graphics card can also be installed into a PCI slot on your Dell Dimension 8100's motherboard; the process is the same as installing the card into the AGP slot, with the only difference being the type of interface that the card uses. AGP graphics cards generally outperform PCI cards, however, so use an AGP card if at all possible.
Make sure that you maintain contact with a grounded metal object (such as the metal part of your computer case) or are otherwise grounded while working inside of the computer in order to prevent potentially damaging static discharge.
