A box scraper can be an incredibly handy tool when leveling small or large areas of ground. From indoor arenas to outdoor baseball diamonds, a box scraper will level those areas. Practice makes perfect, as there are a few components of box scrapers that need to be adjusted at rest or "on the fly." There are ripper teeth inside that tear up the ground, and then a smoothing blade ahead and behind that level any bumps out and spread the dirt smoothly that has been torn up.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Box scraper
  • Tractor with a 3-point hitch and a hydraulic top link
  1. Step 1

Connect the box scraper to the tractor. Attach the box scraper to your 3 point hitch. Attach the hydraulic lines. They will be quick connect mounts, so all you'll need to do is line them up, pull back the connectors, and push them together. They will automatically seal.

  2. Step 2

Practice maneuvering the box scraper itself. Once on your tractor, you will be able to raise and lower the ripping teeth, raise and lower the front blade, and also adjust the pitch of the front blade from an aggressive angled blade, to one that is straight up and down and used more for smoothing.

  3. Step 3

Practice on some ground that you can "tear up" a little. Go find a patch of ground to experiment on and get ready. Lowering the ripper teeth will dig up the soil. If you have a lot of uneven earth, you will want the ripper teeth to tear the uneven mounds down, but at the same time, not have the blades cut so deep so that they rip up the level ground.

  4. Step 4

Practice cutting in and smoothing. The front blade can be used to also dig into and even the uneven ground by slanting it at a hard angle. If you want to let the teeth first tear up the soil, you can literally raise the front blade right off the ground and allow the teeth to do the hard work first. Then come around with teeth raised up, and smooth the area with the front blade.

Tips & Warnings
  • By experimenting with raising and lowering the ripper teeth and front blade, you will be able to level out any area with a little practice and patience.
