How to Change Motor Oil on a Honda
Engine oil performs a crucial task in a Honda engine. Many Hondas are built to be high-revving engines, though even those do not require significant lubrication. Engine oil provides this lubrication. Critical engine components would be damaged or would seize under the normally high temperatures involved in a Honda internal combustion engine. Over time (about 3,000 to 4,000 miles), the engine oil breaks down and you will need to know how to change the motor oil on a Honda so that you don't damage it.
Things You'll Need
- Socket wrench with socket set
- Jack with jack stands
- New oil filter
- Fresh engine oil
- Oil catch pan
- Funnel
Instructions

1
Jack up the vehicle using the front jack point. This is normally located just behind the radiator on most Hondas.
-
2
Place a jack stand underneath each of the front pinch welds and lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
-
-
3
Open the hood and then remove the engine oil filler cap on the top of the engine.
-
4
Climb under the vehicle and place the oil catch pan under the oil pan.
-
5
Turn the oil pan drain bolt counterclockwise to loosen. Remove this bolt and let the oil drain out into the oil catch pan.
-
6
Remove the oil filter. The oil filter is located above the oil pan and is threaded onto the back of the engine block.
-
7
Place a small amount of fresh engine oil onto the seal of the new oil filter and thread the oil filter back onto the engine block. Make sure that you tighten it just enough so that oil will not leak out. It should be "hand tight" only.
-
8
Replace the oil drain bolt and tighten it down.
-
9
Fill the engine with engine oil. You may need to place a funnel in the engine oil filler hole and pour the oil into the funnel.
-
10
Replace the engine oil filler cap and lower the vehicle to the ground.
