Timolol maleate is an ophthalmic medication used to treat glaucoma by reducing internal pressure in the eye which, if left untreated, can cause severe vision damage. The usual recommended dosage is one drop in the affected eye twice a day. The doctor prescribing the medication will then determine if this regular dosage is enough or should be increased. It's important to take this medication exactly as prescribed for best results.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water.

  2. Step 2

Tilt head back slightly. Using your finger, pull down your lower eyelid to make a small space where the eye drop will enter.

  3. Step 3

Press gently on the bottle to release one drop of timolol into the space above your lower eyelid.

  4. Step 4

Repeat on the other eye if necessary. If you wear contact lenses, remove them when administering timolol. Put them back in 15 minutes after using the medication.

  5. Step 5

Close cap on the bottle firmly. Do not touch the tip with your fingers as it can lead to bacterial contamination.

Tips & Warnings
  • Talk to your doctor before taking this medication if you have diabetes, a history of heart failure or poor circulation. Side effects may include a stinging or burning sensation when the medication is administered. Talk to your doctor before using timolol if you are pregnant, plan on becoming pregnant or are nursing.
  • Do not take two doses of Timolol at once. If you miss a dose, skip on to the next one. Do not allow the tip of the bottle to touch your eye or any other surface to prevent contamination. Do not use Timolol if you have bronchial asthma, emphysema, slow heartbeat, cardiogenic shock, active heart failure or conduction disorder.
