With the internet becoming increasingly popular and so many new ways to access it arising, it seems almost necessary to keep up with the crowd by familiarizing yourself with the process of web design. This may sound a little out of reach at first but webs.com (formerly freewebs) has made it almost a trivial task. Your about to learn how you can design free well designed websites for yourself, your friends, or your colleagues.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A little time
  • A little effort
  • A website idea
  1. Step 1

The first step in creating a website is going to be to get your plan on paper. I know it seems ridiculous now but just diving right into the site-builder can make it seem a little crazy with so many options. If you have a plan, you will be able to go into the creation phase with confidence and build exactly what you want.

In your plan you want to outline what pages you want (home, about us, etc.), what extra features you'll need (blog, forums, store, etc.), and how you want your site to look (professional, creative, simple, etc.).

Here is an example of a website I have made using the Webs.com Site Builder. http://BallPythons.webs.com

  2. Step 2

Now that you know what you want out of this site, it's time to go ahead and make your site's Webs.com account. When you choose the website's domain (www.yoursitesdomain.webs.com) make sure you choose one that will be easy for your target audience to remember. Try using one or two words at the most in the domain. While creating your account you will be asked to choose a layout. Choose one that matches the style you decided on in your website plan from step one. You may also notice an HTML only option. This is for users with a knowledge in HTML programming. Here are a couple of examples of sites I've created with that option. http://projectpenguin.webs.com; http://robslateproject.webs.com; and http://ntsoairsoft.webs.com. These sites are much more time consuming and they require at least a beginners skill level in HTML. You can learn some HTML at www.w3schools.com.

  3. Step 3

Now that you have your account created, it's time to create your pages. If your design from part 1 says that you are going to have a home page, about us, blog, forums, and store pages then you want to create all of these. This can either be done through the website management control panel or in the site builder. Just click on the type of page you want to add and follow the prompts.

  4. Step 4

After you have added the pages from your plan, and any additional pages that you want, you can begin entering content. On the left side of the site-builder there is a toolbar that will give your all of the tools you need to successfully add content to your site. Don't forget to add items to your store, categories to your forums, and make regular posts on your blog!

  5. Step 5

Tell everyone about your new website. Post the link on forums or blogs related to your site!

Tips & Warnings
  • Get a domain name like www.yourname.com from sites like godaddy.com or hosting24.com
  • Don't put personally identifying information like home address on your website! It's going to be viewable by anyone anywhere!
