Ah, the single life... it truly is what you make it. When you're on your own, it's all too easy to let feelings of loneliness and "couples envy" keep you focused on what you're missing. Instead, take on the challenge of creating a single life that fulfills you. You can be happy single....

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • You
  • Yourself
  • Your Life
  1. Step 1

Focus on the positive aspects of single life, and appreciate the freedom that comes with being unattached. Being single can be the most liberating experience. Why? Because you don't have to answer to or try to impress anyone - anyone but yourself, that is!

You can spend your time with whomever you like, however you like. You never have to explain why you're home late, or why you neglected to call. You can be as messy or as neat as you like, and nobody else will be offended. You can eat potato chips in bed while reading trashy magazines - or, you can eat a bowl of cereal for dinner if you don't feel like cooking. You can always watch what you want on TV - and hog the entire couch. And you can, (if you choose) let personal hygiene go out the window once in awhile, without scrutiny or judgment. Being single - how sweet it is!

  2. Step 2

Know that you aren't alone. You may not have a "significant" other, but guess what? Over 40 percent of Americans over the age of 18 are currently unmarried. These days, being single is practically the norm! Stereotypes about single life are rapidly disintegrating, and there's just no good reason to feel like an outcast from society just because you don't have a partner. You'll be surprised: Check out the Resources section at the end of this article for links to some very interesting statistics about singles life.

  3. Step 3

Do what you love. When you are spending your time doing the things you enjoy, two absolutely wonderful things are bound to happen...

First: You'll obviously be having fun. How many times have you sat through some activity that you don't naturally enjoy (perhaps in the company of people you don't enjoy), simply to keep your partner happy? When you're single, you can cross that drudgery right off your list of to-dos! Single life is all about doing what you want to do. With whom you want to do it. When you want to do it. It's a simple (and satisfying) way of life.

Second: You'll automatically be putting yourself in situations that allow you to meet people you have something in common with. When was the last time you made a new friend? Sure, the blush of a new romance gets the blood pumping, but making new friends that you really "click" with is just as exhilarating!

  4. Step 4

Be patient with yourself. Who says the single life isn't a positive existence? Stop letting negative messages about being single influence you. Are you content with how you're spending your time? If you're living a satisfying single life, you have everything you truly need - and that means you'll be ready to share it with the right person - when the time is right.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you're finding it difficult to get out there and meet new people, don't hesitate to connect with others on the internet. There are so many websites that are geared toward bringing people with common interests together!

on 7/23/2009 As a lifelong single person....I think this is a right on article. Too often others think that if we are single we must be unhappy, when often the opposite is true 5*

on 7/22/2009 This is right on the money and very well written! I think "single life" is definitely the ultimate time to be selfish and do what one wants!
