Fasting can be difficult, both physically and mentally. Preparing your body for a fast will give you better results, and also make the fast itself easier. You should prepare mentally for the best results.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First you need to know as much as you can about the techniques you have chosen for fasting. Research the pro’s and the con’s. Know the hazards, but also keep in mind all of the benefits. Know how the fast will affect your diet.

  2. Step 2

Once you know all about your chosen method of fasting, you need to set a goal. This is inclusive of thinking out a schedule before-hand. This step is probably the most crucial, because once you begin it won’t be easy—you will probably tell yourself many times that you are ready to quit. One of the biggest things that will keep you going is the goal you have set for yourself.

  3. Step 3

Set your schedule and then keep it (Think of it as your new healthy diet). Remind yourself that you have made a contract with yourself that cannot (well shouldn’t) be broken. Remind yourself of the importance of the fast. If you are fasting for others, or for guidance in your life, meditate on that specific reason. It will help keep your mind from wandering to other things, and will help you get the most out of your fasting.

  4. Step 4

Don’t take everything away from your body at once. Prepare your mind by preparing your body first. It’s also a good idea to intake smaller amounts of salt, sugar, and caffeine to reduce the feeling of need generated by your body.

  5. Step 5

Finally, eat smaller meals before you begin your fast. This will help keep your mind free of physical distractions and help you prepare mentally. You may want to start doing this a day or two in advance. Reducing your meals will signal your mind and your digestive system to the beginning of your fast. Your body will make adjustments appropriately and the hunger that you feel will decrease.
