Things You'll Need:
- time
- a phone
- keep your eyes open
-
Step 1
Keep your eyes open when driving and look around at the curbs and garbage cans, believe it or not people will and do throw away nice working furniture. It may seem like it is junk but as people say one mans trash can be another's mans treasure.
-
Step 2
Call local churches in your area and explain to them that you cannot afford furniture and what you are in need of in terms of what kinds of things. I did this and got a bed, lamps and end tables and all I asked for was a bed.
-
Step 3
Tell family and friends that you are need of some furniture. People will help others and you never know if someone is getting new furniture and might just give you their old stuff.
-
Step 4
Accept whatever you recieve and thank anyone who helped you get the furniture. Send a card or thank them in person so they know you are greatful for their time and their help. Enjoy your new furniture and help others when you are able to do so as well.

on 8/17/2009 Don't forget freecycling and the "wanted" section on Craigslist! I've gotten really nice free stuff there. 5*

on 7/28/2009 Good tips. Some people list free furniture on craigslist, too. All you have to do is go and pick it up.

on 7/14/2009 Relatives are a good source of free furniture, as you say. Also sign up online for the nearest freecycle. Read the postings regularly and contact anyone giving away furniture.
