  1. How to Care for a Nose Ring

    • 1

Choose a good piercer. Body piercing shops are everywhere today, and some are better than others. Nose piercings are a common type of piercing, so most piercers are experienced in doing them. Look for a shop with a working autoclave, and ask to see spore test results. Spore testing will show you that the autoclave is working properly. Be sure that your piercer wears gloves and uses only sterile instruments. All sharps should be properly disposed of in a biohazard container (see References).

    • 2

Decide whether you want a ring or a stud. While rings can be placed in a number of locations on your nostril, it is often best to place the piercing in a position well suited to a stud so you have the option to change your mind. Studs also allow for an invisible nose piercing, in case you want to allow your piercing to heal without other people knowing you had it. Your piercer can place either a stud or a ring into your new nose piercing; however, a ring may be more secure.

    • 3

Clean your piercing daily using commercial saline solution or 1/2 tsp.of salt dissolved in 3 to 4 oz. of water. Use a cotton ball to clean the piercing and stud or ring on both the inside and outside of your nostril. Be sure to remove any crusting on the nose ring before turning it.

    • 4

Apply lavender oil daily using a clean cotton ball or tissue. Gently rotate your nose ring to spread the lavender oil through the wound. Make sure that the lavender oil you choose is medicinal grade before using it on your new nose piercing.

    • 5

Be careful when drying your face to avoid removing your nose stud. Keep cosmetics and hair products away from your new nose piercing to reduce the risk of infection and unattractive scarring.

    • 6

Take a good-quality B vitamin with zinc while your nose piercing heals. This will help with healing.

    • 7

Allow your nose ring to heal for a full 8 to 10 weeks before considering a change of jewelry. Visit your piercer for assistance with changing your nose ring or nose stud.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you notice signs of irritation, infection or bumps at your piercing site even after it is healed, return to daily cleaning with saline solution.

  • Avoid using alcohol, tea tree oil, or Betadine on your nose piercing.
