Step 1
Create a list of reasons why your employer should give you a raise in pay. Convince him that you deserve a raise. Are you a hard worker? Are you always on time and efficient at work? Have you done something to go over and beyond your job duties? Give your employer valid reasons why you should get a raise in pay. Bring along any certificates or degrees you may have received recently to promote your educational and job market value. Remember...your selling yourself so don't be afraid to accentuate your positives.
-
Step 2
Be professional in speaking to your employer. Asking for a raise at work is almost like interviewing for a job. In both instances, your hoping to gain something from the employer that you must convince him to give you. Treat a raise request like a job interview in the fact that you want to look both professional and intelligent in retrieving your needs. Talk to your employer about your current position and what you love about it and any ideas you may have to improve it, production, or customer service. Show your employer that you truly care about your job and plan to be around awhile.
-
Step 3
Show your employer that you are profitable and could find employment elsewhere for better pay. Be careful how you do this, however. Your definitely not looking to make your employer mad. You merely want to find a subtle way to explain that your position is competitive and the salaries for your field are high. Do this by searching the internet for hourly wages in your position or salaries paid. Say, for instance, you work as a veterinarian technician...find out what wages are being paid to vet techs so that you can confront your employer with a wage increase. Make printouts to bring with you to the meeting. You'll be surprise at the reaction you'll get from your employer.
