How to Plant Riccia
Riccia fluitans, also known as Crystalwort, is an aquatic plant which can create a lush mossy look in your aquarium. It does require a bit of effort to get the plant established properly. The primary problem is that Riccia is a rootless plant which will float aimlessly unless you carefully anchor it. However, there are several ways to anchor Riccia to create different effects. Create your own emerald paradise by combining these techniques in your own planted aquarium. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need

- Nylon thread or netting
- Stones, driftwood, or other aquarium decorations
- Java Moss or Willow Moss (optional)
- Dwarf Hair Grass (optional)
Instructions

1
Decide where you would like to grow your Riccia. Due to Riccia's high light requirements (.5 watts per gallon), it is best to put it where it will receive direct light.
-
2
Decide whether you would like to cover solid objects, such as stones or driftwood, or intermix it with Java or Willow Moss or Dwarf Hair Grass.
-
-
3
Spread out a clump of Riccia evenly so that it forms a thin layer.
-
4
Anchor it with nylon thread or netting to cover solid objects. Do not use cotton thread as the Riccia will float away once the thread disintegrates.
-
5
Optionally, tie clumps of Java or Willow Moss around your layer of Riccia in order to hold it tight and then anchor down the Moss itself with more nylon thread.
-
6
You can also plant with Dwarf Hair Grass by layering the Riccia underneath the Dwarf Hair Grass. The grass will eventually root itself in the substrate and anchor the Riccia in the process.
-
7
Prune to keep Riccia short or allow to grow into a ball shape.
